We paced around the house until our paws ached. The palais really was huge.

We bumped into Konstantin, Diana and Felicia again, but they were just sitting in one of the lounges with a cup of tea, speculating wildly about whether Victoria could really be a murderer or not.

We listened to them for a while, but realized that they had no information that could help us.

So we continued our tour. We found out that the staff quarters were on the top floor of the house under the sloping roof, but even there we didn't come across any two-leggeds who were acting suspiciously or who could give us any clues about Theresa's real murderer.

But then—yet again—we witnessed a violent argument. It was the Countess Sophie, who was screaming at her husband like a fury, her face so dark that I feared her head would explode.

"What do you mean we're keeping him?" she screeched. "Have you completely lost your mind? He's a liability now. Do you want to embarrass us in front of all our friends, in the face of all good society?"

Count Alexander replied calmly: "He is the perfect butler, the likes of which we would certainly not find again so easily. And the matter with Diana … they've sorted that out now, haven't they? She seems to have turned her attention to Konstantin Eschenbach."

"It almost sounds like you regret it," Sophie hissed, "but Konstantin is the perfect match. A prince, after all, and besides—"

"Prince, king, emperor … who cares!" Alexander was still speaking in a very calm voice. He didn't even smell particularly excited. I had no idea how the man did it.

"I had the impression that Diana really loves Elias," he told his wife. "To stand up on a stage in front of everyone and admit her feelings … that was incredibly brave. I'm proud of her."

"Proud? Do you want her to become the wife of a domestic servant? Is that the future you want for our only child?"

"What I wish for Diana is that she marries for love, and doesn’t settle for some guy her mother tries to talk her into marrying just because he's a prince."

"You're out of your mind," Sophie hissed.

Alexander suddenly raised his hand and stroked her cheek tenderly. "Diana should marry for love," he repeated, "just as her parents once did. Or have you forgotten that already?"
